The Growth Leaders

The S&P 500 ranked on revenue, margin, and cash

Updated August 17, 2026

The SYMBOL card's Business Growth score asks one question: is the business itself getting better? This page is that question turned into a leaderboard — the S&P 500 ranked on the three things that show a business improving: revenue, operating margin, and operating cash flow.

Each is measured the patient way — the last twelve months against the twelve months a year earlier — so you're seeing real year-over-year change, not a single noisy quarter. And each is ranked twice: against the whole index, and against the stock's own sector, so a company growing fast for its industry gets credit even when the index has faster names elsewhere.

One thing to expect: these reads lag the price, on purpose. Fundamentals only update when a company files, so the rankings move on a quarterly clock. That's a feature — it keeps the operations view clean of day-to-day price noise. A stock can be winning on operations and flat on price; that gap is exactly when this lens earns its keep.

The composite comes first; the three drivers behind it follow.

What to look for as you scan

All three legs firing at once. A name in the top tier on revenue, margin, and cash flow — and on the composite — is a genuine find: every part of the business moving the right way together. Rare, and worth a closer look.

Divergences between the drivers. High revenue growth but weak margin expansion is a company growing the top line without yet converting it — often a build-out phase or pricing pressure. Strong margins on flat revenue point to cost-cutting or a mix shift on a flat business. Cash flow out of step with the income statement is usually timing — working capital or capex.

A strong score against a weak price. The price columns next to each ranking are context, not the input. A high growth score sitting beside red price columns is the "operations divergence" — the business is winning, the price isn't. Sometimes the price catches up to the business; sometimes the market is seeing something the trailing numbers haven't. The lens flags the gap; it doesn't tell you which side wins.

That last pattern is the whole point of a business-only view: it surfaces companies improving underneath a price that hasn't noticed — and lets you decide whether that's an opportunity or a warning.
